Founded in 2006, Ferm Living is a Danish design brand rooted in authentic design and responsible thinking. From our home in Copenhagen, we collaborate with skilled partners around the world, fusing a Scandinavian mindset with global craft and traditions to create collections of furniture, accessories and lighting.
Our Approach to Responsibility
Responsibility shapes how we think, create and operate at Ferm Living. It is central to how we design, develop and deliver our products — guided by our Responsibility Ambition and nine 2030 Commitments across three pillars: Our Planet, Our Society and Our Community.
Responsible Production
Material choices, construction methods, durability and end-of-life pathways are considered as integral parts of the creative process, not as later adjustments. Defined "Responsible Criteria" serve as practical benchmarks throughout design and product development, ensuring certified materials and circular practices are built in from the outset.
A Responsible Supply Chain
We work closely with suppliers chosen for their craft expertise, strengthening engagement through the Qarma platform to improve transparency, documentation and data quality. Our "Responsible Suppliers" framework sets clear expectations for ethical and sustainable business practice.
Turning Insight Into Action
A comprehensive CO₂eq hotspot analysis across our full product range helps us prioritise where reductions matter most, moving from data collection to disciplined, targeted action across materials, production and logistics.

Origin & Production
Designed
Copenhagen, Denmark
Conceived in our Copenhagen design studio — a design that began with the body and extended outward, to the material, the forest it is sourced from, and the future.

A design that began with the body and extended outward — to the material, the forest it is sourced from, and the future.
Designing a dining chair is, in many ways, the most demanding task in furniture design. It is an object the body knows intimately, its proportions felt before they are seen, its comfort assessed within seconds of sitting down.
The Boda Dining Chair Series approaches this with clarity and restraint — not with the ambition to reinvent, but to refine. What emerged is a chair built around a single idea: that responsibility to the person sitting in it and responsibility to the world it comes from are not separate considerations, but the same one.
"Responsibility to the person sitting in it and responsibility to the world it comes from are not separate considerations, but the same one."
Much of the design process was dedicated to refining the relationship between the back leg and the backrest. Rather than treating these as separate elements to be joined, the designers worked to allow the curved back leg to rise naturally into a double-rail backrest, establishing a line of structural continuity that runs through the entire chair. The rounded junctions where these elements meet soften the form without weakening it — a detail that speaks as much to longevity as it does to appearance.
Comfort was approached with the same attention. The geometry of the Boda was studied and adjusted with the seated body in mind, so that the support it offers is embedded in its proportions. The result is a chair that works across long meals, working hours, and everyday routines — one that sustains the body as naturally as it sits within a room.
That same commitment extends to the material. The Boda is available in solid oak, ash, and beech, each paired with a matching plywood veneer seat. All versions are made from FSC™ Mix-certified wood — ensuring the forests from which the Boda is drawn are managed to protect biodiversity, support the communities that work within them, and remain capable of regenerating for the long term.
As with every Ferm Living design, the Boda was developed against a defined set of "Responsible Criteria" — practical benchmarks covering material performance, durability, certifications, climate screening, and social responsibility, applied from the very first sketch rather than adjusted in afterwards.
Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not leave the surface wet.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to preserve the finish.
Tighten any loose joints periodically for long-lasting stability.
The oiled and lacquered finish can be refreshed with standard wood care products if marked.
Designed for indoor use only. Do not expose to prolonged humidity.
Pro-Long — Designed to Be Kept
The Boda is supported by Ferm Living's spare-parts service and Pro-Long pilot project, which guide repairs, facilitate refurbishment and promote reuse — extending the functional life of the chair and reducing waste, material consumption and emissions over time.
Sustainability and responsibility have many dimensions. For us, it is about more than climate impact alone — it encompasses materials, design, people and partnerships, all working together to create lasting positive change.
Conscious Consumption
FSC™, the Forest Stewardship Council™, is an international non-profit certification scheme for wood and paper. FSC-certified forestry protects biodiversity, limits harvesting to sustainable levels, and safeguards workers' rights across the supply chain. Ferm Living is also working towards FSC Traces, a traceability system intended to track certified forest-based materials from origin to final product.
Responsibility in Design
Responsible choices are made from the earliest design stages, where decisions shape a product's environmental and social footprint. Ferm Living's in-house design team works against a defined set of responsibility criteria covering quality, function, materials for longevity, disassembly, certifications, climate screening, and commitment to human rights and fair labour practices.
Reducing Our Impact
Ferm Living takes responsibility for understanding and managing the impact of its business, measuring the CO₂eq footprint of products and materials using Målbar's Climate Screening Tool, based on the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology — the same framework applied to this chair's LCA screening in section 06. In 2025, Ferm Living applied a comprehensive CO₂eq hotspot analysis across its full range for the second time, prioritising reduction efforts where impact is greatest.
Responsible Supply Chain
Ferm Living's "Responsible Suppliers" framework sets clear expectations for ethical and sustainable business practices, ensuring alignment with our values. In 2025, supplier engagement was strengthened through the Qarma platform, enhancing transparency, documentation and data quality across the supplier portfolio — 68% of suppliers were classified as responsible in 2025, with an ambition of 70–73% by the end of 2026.
Certifications
Sourcing and working with certified materials is central to Ferm Living's focus. The CERTIFIED tag guarantees that a product meets recognised standards such as FSC™, GOTS, GRS, or OCS 100/Organic Blended, supporting both environmental and social responsibility. In 2025, the share of certified products across the collection grew to 29%, with a 2026 goal of 32–35% for the entire collection.
Design Approach
Ferm Living designs for longevity, creating high-quality, functional products that are responsibly crafted and carry enduring aesthetic appeal — encouraging conscious consumption, buying better, and using products for longer. This approach is guided by defined "Responsible Criteria", practical benchmarks ensuring environmental and social considerations, certified materials, and circular practices are integrated from the outset.
UN Global Compact
Ferm Living is a long-standing participant in the UN Global Compact. Our Code of Conduct aligns with its Ten Principles, and all suppliers are required to adhere to it as part of our commitment to responsible business practice.
Product Safety & Compliance
Product safety and compliance are ensured through structured risk assessments and rigorous testing in accredited laboratories. Ferm Living complies with applicable national and international regulations, including the EU's REACH regulation governing the manufacture, import and use of chemical substances — safeguarding environmental and health requirements while supporting responsible production and product quality.
